A Comedic Conundrum: My Thoughts on Comedians and Responsibility

 Recently, something rather peculiar has popped into my head, and I’m wrestling with it like a cat with a laser pointer. As someone who follows comedians religiously and attends comedy shows like they’re a religious experience, I can confidently say that laughter truly is the best medicine. Honestly, it’s helped me navigate the ups and downs of life—who needs therapy when you’ve got stand-up?

Now, I’ve always felt that celebrities have a bit of a duty to set a good example. After all, they’re practically role models, whether they like it or not. They’re blessed with fame and fortune, so why not pay it forward by supporting good causes? Even if it means backing someone who isn’t exactly the crowd favourite, it shows us middle-class folk where our hard-earned cash should be going.

But here’s where it gets interesting: comedians have a unique role in society. They’re meant to make us laugh about all sorts of things—both the ridiculous and the serious. So when some of them start to speak out, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief. Why would I want to fork out my precious pennies to see someone who fundamentally supports a person I believe is seriously hurting my well-being from the core?

I’ve got to admit, I respect comedians who take a stand, even if it means losing a few fans along the way. Sure, they might gain a follower or two by posting a picture with someone I don’t agree with, or even by doing a podcast with them. But, honestly, it’s the best move they could make! Not only does it save me money, but it also gives me more respect for them.

That said, I’m not about to follow, share, or buy anything from them ever again. But hey, I want more people to wake up to this idea! The more comedians who take a stand, the easier it is for folks like me to choose who to support for a good laugh.

Now, I get it—not everyone is going to come out and play the hero, and that’s fine. If I don’t know, I don’t know, right? You can’t please everyone. But when a comedian does, it works in my favour—big time!

In my personal view, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Bargaining, middling and gratuity (general negotiation for services rendered) Financial etiquette has never been a new struggle. It has only been amplified since the arrival of the global Covid-19 pandemic. Understandably so since many people had to tighten their belts to make a living more bearable during a difficult time, but this then begs the question; by skimping and counting our dollars, should we still be expected to pay full prices for services that have been scaled down to accommodate us during this world crisis?
